Dr. Krishna (Balki) Balakrishnan joined the NIH in May 1999. As Marketing Group Leader at the NIH Office of technology Transfer since January 2001, he leads the office’s efforts in communicating the value of NIH discoveries to the biopharmaceutical industry, and in identifying potential licensing partners. He has introduced a number of innovative marketing programs, such as increased emphasis on branding, increased use of electronic communication media, and the use of advanced principles of business to business marketing. Between May 1999 and January 2001, he worked at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's Office of Technology Development, where he also served as the Chairman of the Institute's Technology Evaluation and Advisory Committee. Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Balakrishnan worked for over 15 years in the private sector in the areas of research and development, manufacturing, marketing and business development. He began his professional career at DNAX, a division of the pharmaceutical company Schering Plough, where he carried out research work on biosensors and cell surface immunology. He continued his scientific work in the bio-pharmaceutical industry with BAbCO (now part of Covance), serving in the areas of new product development, process/scale-up optimization and contract research services. While at BAbCO, he established and managed three laboratories focussed on tissue culture, biochemistry and mouse antibody production respectively. He won a number of Small Business Innovation Research awards from the NIH to supplement his research work at BAbCO. After a number of years in research and new product development, Dr. Balakrishnan transitioned into manufacturing, marketing and business development. He established an active licensing program at BAbCO where he was also responsible for developing the marketing strategy for newly licensed products. He also served Sepragen, Clontech and Molecular Probes in the areas of business planning, technology evaluation, marketing and licensing. Dr. Balakrishnan has published a number of highly cited research papers and is the author of two patents. A native of Kerala, Dr. Balakrishnan received his school education in the cities of Delhi and Trivandrum, before earning a combined Bachelor's and Master's degree in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur. He then worked with Dr. Harden McConnell to earn a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Stanford University. He subsequently received his M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Balakrishnan champions the cause of small companies, and is devoted to a number of mentoring and volunteer activities. He has been successful in fostering greater cooperation and partnerships between industry and academia by employing the perspectives he has gained by working in both the private and public sectors. He lives in Rockville with his wife Sheela, a Montessori teacher and their two children, Karthik and Purnima. |
