ExpertiseDr. Opendra Sharma is a veteran program officer in the Pathogenesis and Basic Research Brach, Division of AIDS, NIAID. He manages diverse portfolio of research grants on HIV structure, virus life cycle, host-virus interactions, mucosal immunology, mechanisms of disease progression and transmission. He has provided leadership for the NIH AIDS Research and Reference Reagent Program contract. Under his guidance the Reagent Program has become a unique worldwide resource of critical reagents, many of them not otherwise readily available for HIV/AIDS research. He proactively coordinates fellowship and career awards at DAIDS. Opendra promotes mentorship of young scientists and underrepresented minorities by organizing fellows and new investigators workshops on grantsmanship and career development at the Keystone Symposia and international meetings. Opendra has spearheaded several PAs, RFAs and RFPs. Prior to joining DAIDS in 1991 he seved as Grants Associate in the Office of NIH Director. He is recipient of many awards at NIH including NIH Directors Award and several MIAID MERIT awards. Before joining the NIH in 1989, he was Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine at Denver and a successful NIH grantee. He has published extensively on gene regulation and host-virus interactions in high profiled journals.
