CRY Benefit Cricket Tournament

The Washington DC chapter of Child Relief and You (CRY) organized a benefit cricket tournament on 22nd August in Alexandria, Virginia (about an hour drive south from NIH main campus). The purpose of this game was to raise revenue for CRY's social activities in India. The tournament was a variant of cricket called "Box cricket" with each team having six players, with each inning being 6 overs long. It was a knockout tournament, once a team looses it is out of the game, no second chances. The team who wins moves to the next round. A total of 16 teams participated and a total of around 1000 dollars were raised from the game.

Although we did not have a formal cricket club before this, a few in our group took over the task of getting together the interested and started practicing in a local baseball field (since there are very few cricket fields in America, cricket is mostly unknown over here). The main organizer was Rajeev and the team included Tapas, as captain, Manjunath, Chhabi, Surender, Anuj and Rajeev with Pavan and Aniruddha as reserve players. The team was christened NIH India Cricket Club (NICC). The team practiced several weekends, with other potential players occasionally trying their hands at our favorite game. A few times we even had a few spectators (local residents) trying to figure out what a bunch of Indians are doing in the baseball field.

Our team played well, but we had stiff competition. We fielded first and the opposite team scored 62. We chased the score bravely but our first public game ended with 53 runs. Although we lost the first game, our spirits are still high. The BHUVANS of NICC are now practicing for future tournaments.
