Heritage India Festival June 19-20, 2004 Asha for education and Vibha, two non-government organization, participated in the Heritage India Festival in the Washington DC metro area, aiming to raise revenues for their activities in India. A few of the our members who are also active in these NGOs requested our group to volunteer for the event. The work was hard but the cause is noble and members of NIA are very enthusiastic to volunteer their time and labor for social activities. A few volunteered to man the stalls and several just visited the festival to encourage the volunteers and make donations. The preparations started several days in advance where our members learned from scratch how to apply mehandi, to construct a kite (that flies..) and to paint t-shirts. On the days of the festival, each volunteer devoted any where from 4-10hrs a day, passing on their newly acquired expertise to kids while raising money for other kids living in India whom none of us even knows. All stalls did quite well. In all the three stalls were able to raise several thousand dollars, 100% of which will be sent to India for the social service activities. Here are a few memories from the event.
