Independence Day celebrations, August 15th, 2004 A few Indian organizations in the Washington D.C. area invited our group to present a dance drama for the Independence Day celebrations at a local school. Initially, it was a scary thought, to prepare a skit from scratch in about 2 weeks with absolute novices most of who had never danced on stage. But the enthusiasm was great and we have a few very creative people amongst us. It was decided to prepare a dance drama as a tribute to our country on its 58th day of Independence from the British. For the next 15 days, about 12 of us toiled every night to train for the event. The idea developed with time, the music was recorded and re-recorded and re-recorded. Himani took charge of choreographing the dance steps while Akansha took over preparing a slide show that would be the background. Both of them were helped by everyone else in whatever way they could. Rajeev, Praful, Maloy, Tej, Vaishali, Malancha, Rohini and Himani practiced the steps every night, Akansha and Tej arranged and synchronized the slide show with the music, narration and dance, while Subojit lent is beautiful voice for the narration. Rohini also played the synthesizer to fill in the gaps in the music. The final touches to the show were given on 14th of August. And on 15th, the group presented a very well synchronized, well choreographed and a very confident show that was well received and appreciated.
